A field guide — on style, character, and the small things that matter.

Read one a day. Or all in an evening. Ignore the ones that don't apply. Argue with the ones that do.

Dress & Grooming

  1. Own one suit that actually fits. Off-the-rack is a starting point, not a finish line.
  2. A white shirt, a navy blazer, and dark denim will get you through 80% of your life.
  3. Shoes tell people who you are before you open your mouth. Polish them.
  4. Match your belt to your shoes. Every time. No exceptions.
  5. If the tie is wider than your lapel, one of them is wrong.
  6. Sunglasses are not an indoor accessory. Neither is a hat at dinner.
  7. Shave, or grow it on purpose. Somewhere in between is just laziness with a shadow.
  8. Cut your nails. Yes, the ones on your feet too.
  9. Cologne is punctuation, not a paragraph. Two sprays. Never on the shirt.
  10. Iron the shirt. The wrinkles you can't see are the ones everyone else does.
  11. Socks are part of the outfit. Treat them like it.
  12. Wear a watch. Even if your phone tells the time, a watch tells a story.
  13. If it doesn't fit in the shoulders, it doesn't fit. Everything else is a tailor's problem.
  14. Cargo shorts are a choice. Live with the consequences.

Conduct & Character

  1. Be on time. Early is on time. On time is late.
  2. A firm handshake, eye contact, your name. That's the opening move.
  3. When you're wrong, say so. Fast. Without garnish.
  4. Never explain, never complain — but always thank.
  5. The measure of a man is how he treats people who can do nothing for him.
  6. Keep your word or don't give it.
  7. Don't gossip. It's a tax on your credibility, paid in installments.
  8. Have an opinion. Hold it loosely. Change it when the facts do.
  9. Compliment specifically. Criticize privately. Never in reverse.
  10. Say the difficult thing early. It only gets more expensive.
  11. You are allowed to be angry. You are not allowed to be cruel.
  12. The most powerful sentence in any negotiation is silence. Learn to use it.
  13. Never punch down. It's not a fight, it's a confession.
  14. Own your mistakes out loud. Own your wins quietly.

Money

  1. Spend less than you make. Everything else is arithmetic.
  2. Tip well. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to be there.
  3. Never split a check to the cent. Round up and move on.
  4. Own your investments, don't rent an opinion about them.
  5. The most expensive thing you'll ever own is a bad relationship with money.
  6. Pay for the good coffee. Skip the bad car.
  7. A generous man is never mistaken for a rich one, and doesn't care.
  8. Buy quality once. Buy junk forever.
  9. Debt is a hostage situation you agreed to.
  10. Cash still matters. Carry some.

Work

  1. Do the job you have better than anyone expects. That's how you get the next one.
  2. Reply to the email. Even if the reply is ‘no’ or ‘later.’
  3. Never send an angry message the night you write it.
  4. Meetings without an agenda are naps with worse seating.
  5. Under-promise. Over-deliver. Then repeat.
  6. The person who takes the notes runs the meeting.
  7. Learn to write a clear sentence. It is the single most under-priced skill in any career.
  8. Don't burn a bridge you might have to swim under.
  9. Give credit publicly. Take blame the same way.
  10. If you're the smartest person in the room, find a better room.

Love, Friendship, & the People Who Matter

  1. Call your mother.
  2. Text your friends first sometimes. They wonder too.
  3. Show up. Weddings, funerals, hospitals, moving day. Just show up.
  4. The person you love should not have to guess how you feel. Say it. Often.
  5. Flowers for no reason are worth ten flowers for an apology.
  6. Never talk about your partner badly in public. Not even as a joke.
  7. Listen to answer, not to reply.
  8. Remember birthdays. There's an app. There's no excuse.
  9. The friend who calls you out is the one to keep.
  10. Apologize without the word ‘but.’ It cancels everything before it.
  11. Love is a verb, not a mood. Do the verb even on the bad days.

Dining & Drink

  1. Learn to cook one great meal. Learn to cook three good ones.
  2. Order the second-cheapest wine only if you actually like it. Otherwise, ask.
  3. Steak: medium-rare, unless you're specifically wrong about it.
  4. Never send back food you already ate half of.
  5. Learn to make one cocktail so well you never have to order one at a bad bar.
  6. Coffee before the meeting. Water during it. Whiskey after — maybe.
  7. Read the menu once, decide, close it. The waiter has other tables.
  8. Break bread with people who disagree with you. Learn something.
  9. Never be the drunkest person at your own party.
  10. A good host makes strangers into friends. A great one does it without them noticing.

Health & Body

  1. Sleep is not a luxury. It's the foundation everything else is built on.
  2. Lift something heavy. Walk somewhere far. Every week.
  3. Drink water. More than you think.
  4. See a doctor before you need to. See a dentist before it hurts.
  5. Stretch. Your future back will send a thank-you card.
  6. Learn to sit with a feeling without medicating it.
  7. Therapy is not weakness. It's maintenance for the thing running everything else.
  8. You are what you scroll. Curate accordingly.
  9. Sunscreen. Every day. Yes, in winter. Yes, you.
  10. Put the phone down an hour before bed. You'll thank yourself twice — tonight and tomorrow.

Skills Every Man Should Have

  1. Know how to tie a tie. A real one. Not a clip.
  2. Know how to change a tire, jump a battery, and unclog a drain.
  3. Know how to write a handwritten thank-you note. Then actually do it.
  4. Know how to give a toast under two minutes.
  5. Know how to hold a baby without panic.
  6. Know how to iron a shirt, sew a button, and pack a suit without wrinkles.
  7. Know how to swim, well enough to save yourself.
  8. Know how to build a fire. Even if you never need to.
  9. Know how to disagree without raising your voice.
  10. Know how to be alone without being lonely.

Style of Life

  1. Keep a book on the nightstand. Read a page. Every night.
  2. Travel light. In every sense.
  3. Have a signature drink, a signature dish, and a signature story. Don't overuse any of them.
  4. Handwrite the important things. Type the rest.
  5. The car is not the man. Neither is the watch, the house, or the title on the door.
  6. Master one hobby that has nothing to do with your work.
  7. Learn to sit in a restaurant alone with no phone. Order well. Enjoy it.
  8. Take the photograph, then put the camera down and be there.
  9. Do one hard thing a day that no one is making you do.
  10. Leave every room, every conversation, and every person a little better than you found them.
  11. The last rule is the one you write yourself. Make it a good one.
Rules are scaffolding. Character is the building. Now go be useful to someone.
